  • News Update - February 14, 2004

  • I have the extremely sad news to report that Alan James Smolak (aka Al McCombo, former guitarist of the Forgotten Rebels) passed away on February 11, 2004. I had never met Al in person but had the pleasure of corresponding with him in the past via email about his time with the Rebels. A thread in the forums has been started to share your memories of Alan.

Obituary in The New Zealand Herald
    SMOLAK

Alan James (Al McCombo). On 11 February 2004. At home in Raglan. Beloved partner of Rachel. Dearly loved son of Shirley and the late Jim. Loved brother of David. Will be dearly missed by all. "Buy the ticket, take the ride, and if things get heavier than you anticipated, well, chalk it up to forced consciousness expansion." H.S.T. In keeping with Al's wishes, a private cremation has been held. Seddon Park Funeral Home FDANZ - Griefcare

Obituary in The Globe and Mail
ALAN J. SMOLAK A.K.A. AL MOCAMBO OCT. 1

ALAN J. SMOLAK A.K.A. AL MOCAMBO OCT. 1, 1958 - FEB. 11, 2004 ...'What a long strange trip it's been'... Smo left the stage for the last time at his home in Raglan N.Z. after a short, yet defiant rage against cancer. Al is survived by his partner Rachel Titchner (N.Z.), his mother Shirley, brother David and predeceased by his father Jim, all of St. Catharines, Ont. Born and raised in St. Catharines and a graduate of McMaster, Al was a paragon of fun who tripped the light fantastic for over four decades on a career path whose continuum and patterning even Rubik would struggle with. From his early days as a G.M. security guard, to co-founder and lead 'axe' for the plangent Forgotten Rebels, to corporate tax partner with Coopers Lybrand in Toronto and Melbourne as a GST specialist and then into private practice at Gang of Four in Melbourne, he rounded out most recently as restaurateur and promoter of all vibes culinary and auditory in Raglan N.Z. Al's extant legacy was a most amusing and delicate balance of corporate sensibilities and Bohemian irreverence. While there may not be a second set for this Renaissance man, all those who knew and loved him will have a lengthy encore in their mind's eye of fond remembrances and anecdotes. Much of Al's spirit can be aptly summed up by quoting one of his favourite writers. In the words of H.S. Thompson, 'When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.' In memory of Al, follow your heart or consider the Canadian Cancer Society or the Waikatu Palliative Care Unit, Hamilton N.Z.

  • News Update - January 8, 2004

  • A new section to the website has been added! There's now a video section because believe it or not The Forgotten Rebels do have videos. You can check out some screen caps and soon I'll be putting up short clips from each of the videos. Some of the videos that don't have a pic are rumored to exist so if anybody has copies of these videos please let me know.
  • All the official F.R.'s videos I have are being compiled onto a DVD that I will be making available for cost of materials and shipping in the trading section soon! It should be done in a couple of months so you'll have to wait a little bit. It's all the videos and footage that I was offering on the VHS tape. It should be enough to make any F.R.'s fan happy.

  • News Update - January 1, 2004

  • Happy New Year from the Forgotten Rebels! Jeff C sent me in the great picture to the right (click for full size) and wished myself a Happy New Year and I'm passing it on to all the Forgotten Rebels fans! Happy New Year!

  • The FAQ has been updated with more info on Mickey revealed in the interview by Brado but is still horribly inaccurate and out of date

  • News Update - October 8, 2003

  • Mickey's Solo Album: Finally the myths and rumors have all come true (thanks to Vic for altering me to this info from the F.R. Forums. After waiting for decades (literally) for a promised solo album from Mickey it is finally here, 'Welcome To My Basement'! The promised date is October 2003 so we'll all be salivating at the bit for new music from the golden vocal chords of Mickey. The cover (pictured to the right) is classic Mickey style. Check out Amp Records website for the page on Mickey DeSadist's album details. The press release information is copied below for your enjoyment:

    MICKEY DeSADIST

We'll, he's back again... this time with his first solo album!!! Forgotten Rebels vocalist and Canadian punk rock legend Mickey DeSadist whips up 16 tracks of catchy, humourous, raw punk rock. A manic combination of '77 style punk, with a splash of glam rock, a smattering of original 50's era rock and roll and a pinch of Vegas showtunes. He even throws in 2 (!!) GG Allin covers for good measure!!! All the elements Forgotten Rebels fans have come to expect are here, along with a few surprises along the way. 'Welcome To My Basement' has been years in the making. Wanting to share some of the great tunes he has written that didn't have a place in the Rebels' catalogue, MIckey has opened his vaults and put together an impressive album. All the cynicism, sarcasm, and humour we've come to love is well on display, delivered only the way he can. Come on down to his basement...

  • I'm also working on coverting over all the F.R.'s videos I have on video over to DVD (with a nice menu) and be able to offer that instead of the VHS version. Please keep an eye on this page for news when this is completed.

  • News Update - July 10, 2003

  • There is a Mickey DeSadist track on a compilation album put out by Amp Records. The it's called 'Hawaii On Welfare' and is track 16 off of Welcome Home Punk which is a compilation label sampler.

  • Mickey is putting out a full Solo album! There is no word yet on a street date but in the forum 'Scottie too Hottie' said that 'I e-mail Larry at AMP records and he is in the process of touching up the artwork.' he also added later that it should be released early June but there is no sign of it yet. I'm sure I'll get an email from Amp letting me know when it comes out. Below is the post straight from the Amp Records site:

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!

AMP is proud to announce the first ever solo release from punk rock legend Mickey DeSadist, from the infamous Forgotten Rebels. The CD is titled "A Forgotten Rebel: Welcome To My Basement". 16 songs of good old classic punk with a touch of glam. Press Release - Press Release - Press Release - April 26, 2003
    Doughboy joins Rebels.

Canada's Forgotten Rebels are pleased to announce there new drummer Paul Newman. Paul is best known as the drummer for the gold recording artists The Doughboys. Paul's contributions were significant to the success of the Doughboys from 1989 to 1997. He had played on Happy Accidents (Restless Records), When Up Turns To Down E.P.(Restless Records), Crush (A&M) and Turn Me On (A&M). After the band broke up in 1997 Paul started work as a road manager. He had been working with many bands including The Rebels. “I guess I was in the right place at the right time.” Says Newman “My first band used to cover Forgotten Rebels so playing with them will be a blast!” The Rebels lead singer Mickey DeSadist says he is anxious to start recording with this new line-up which he says is more in tune with the Rebels classic sound. Jeff Campbell the Rebels lead guitarist says “Paul really breaths hew life into the band”. The Rebels are currently working on a new Album and also playing local live shows. They will be playing May 3 in Thorald (near St. Catherine's) at Club 54.

  • Major major major news day today! First off, apparantly Mickey Desadest has a solo album coming out!! It will be released on Amp Records and is titled "A Forgotten Rebel: Welcome To My Basement". Thanks Vic for posting this news item in the Forgotten Rebels Forum

  • I've posted an exclusive uncut interview that Dave McGhire did with The View magazine! This interview reveals a lot of inside information that probably nobody outside of the Forgotten Rebels knows. This interview is of interest to absolutely anyone who's listened to the Rebels in the last 22 years. Take a read.

  • You may have noticed a new look to the website!! I thought it was time to bring the site into the 21st century and spruce it up a bit. I'll be making it look a little better here and there as time passes. Please stay with me as some links will be broken for a little bit and I'll try to fix as many as I can in as short of time as I can. This update to the site will enable me to post information to the site a whole more quick than previously. BTW: The picture of Dave to the right was taken by Drew Cunningham on November 4, 2000 at Lee's Palace.

  • Old review of Nobodys Hero's by Now Online Edition posted! and another old interview from Eye Weekly. Enjoy!

  • I think this deserved to go on the front page of the website. This is copied from a post in the Forgotten Rebels Forum:

Posted: 16 Apr 2003 09:00 pm Post subject: Dave Hambelton

    A sad note
one of the FR's biggest fans passed away lasy Sun night. Dave Hambelton died at MUMC, as a result of kidney failure following a 3 week battle with pneumonia. For years, David had a very rare disease which slowly stripped away his mobility. His illness was so rare, that only a handful of people throughout the world have it, and appently the disease remains unnamed. For the final year of his life, Dave was in a wheelchair, but still managed to get out to a few local concerts when he could. For years, David was a fixture at Rebel's shows. He had all the albums signed, and the walls of his apatment were decorated with posters of Mickey and crew! Dave's mother informed this writer that David died listening to his favorite bands on his headphones, which included The Ramones, The Rebels, and The Head. David was a real fan, and his love of the local scene is what all musicians work for! He will be missed in our community.
There will be a memorial service for Dave Hambelton at Emmaus Place Apartments, 35 Aikman Ave. Hamilton On on Wed April 23rd at 1:30. All are invited to share memories of our friend. Rick P.

    News Update - March 28, 2003

  • Here's an article by David Summers regarding the departure of Dave from the band. I don't quite understand the part about Dave and Mickey being the only ones dedicating any longevity to the band. I believe that Jeffrey Campbell has been in the band since at least 1989, which I believe is now 14 years ago (more than half the bands history). The article is copied below for your convenience in case they delete the original article.

Forgotten Rebel Gives Up The Beat After 22 Years

    Forgotten Rebels' Mickey DeSadist

After devoting the past 22 years of his life to the cause of punk rock, Forgotten Rebels drummer Dave McGhire is calling it a day. Leaving the band he has been with since their 1981 album This Ain’t Hollywood…This Is Rock And Roll, McGhire cited irreconcilable differences with some of his band mates as the reason for his sudden departure. With his explanation written out fully on the Forgotten Rebels website, the drummer states that the direction he hoped the band would take, which included continuing to record new material and to advance as artists, was not an interest he shared with some of his other fellow Rebels.

Although he doesn’t name names on who he feels wasn’t showing "appreciation" for the work of the band, he does take time to make sure no one feels that his departure has anything to do with singer Mickey De Sadist whom he calls a "friend for life." In the 26 years that the band has been in existence, it has suffered through endless amounts of line-up changes, with McGhire and DeSadist being the only current members who’ve really dedicated any solid amount of time to the group. Now with the drummer’s exit, De Sadist has become the sole survivor from the bands early days when they were seen as favourites of the Canadian punk scene.

Hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, the band formed in the late ‘70s and recorded the 1978 demo Burning The Flag. Although few copies were ever made, a growing fan base allowed them to make the EP Tomorrow Belongs To Us and their debut album In Love With The System, a Canadian classic that displayed their Ramones meets The Sex Pistols influences. Now, with nine albums and seven videos credited to the group, the Forgotten Rebels have shared the stage with such artists as The Clash, Iggy Pop, Ian Hunter (from Mott The Hoople), Mick Ronson and The Cramps. No replacement for McGhire has yet been announced.

    News Update - March 25, 2003

  • It's my sad duty to inform you that Dave McGhire has left the Forgotten Rebels today. I'll let his letter do the talking:

    March 25 2003

To all Forgotten Rebels fans, Yes I have officially resigned my position as drummer in the Forgotten Rebels after 22 years of service. We have had a lot of member changes ( yea I know, A LOT ) over the years but somehow the core of the Rebels, Mickey De Sadist and myself have managed to stay together since 1981 through 6 albums and 7 videos together.

The reasons are simple, I do feel that for any band to progress, they must continue to make records and videos in order to stay relevant and a real band. But in the end, only Mickey and myself seem to feel this way. Moreover, I am no longer willing to work hard behind the scenes for the benefit of other members that do not have any appreciation for the work being done. I am greatly saddened by having to take this step as the Rebels were a BIG part of my life's work. But in the end, a band is like a family and differences in opinion do happen and some are irreconcilable. Therefore, I am left with no choice because of my beliefs...it is now time to leave. I have enjoyed my partnership with Mickey and I will miss very much making music together. The Forgotten Rebels aside, Mickey and myself are and will remain friends for life and this is much more important to both of us.

I do wish Mickey and the Rebels the best in all future endeavours.

To all fans... I am especially thankfull for all your support over the years, it was fun and I will miss it.
Punk rock...it's in the Blood !

    Sincerely
    Dave McGhire
    Drummer, The Forgotten Rebels

  • We now have FORUMS!! As some of you may or may not have noticed, the email list hasn't been working for a while. While this is disappointing, it's prompted the new forum section to be put up! You can discuss anything and everything Rebels! Have fun!

  • Rebels are playing two shows this month!! They'll be playing on February 21 and 22 at Healey's (Jeff Healey's Bar). Go to gigs to get all the info.

  • Nope, your eyes didn't decieve you! That's a Forgotten Rebels shirt in the video 'Hundred Million' by Treble Charger. Check out the pic to the right, I believe it's Jay McCaslin, the bassist from Sum 41. If anybody has a better screen cap of the picture, please send it to me
